The Inner West is not an empty block. Yards are small, already built against the house, and constrained by what sits on every side: a rear lane that will take a barrow and little else, winter shade from a two-storey neighbour, reactive clay under failed concrete, and heritage brick that is to remain.
DC designs, constructs and maintains courtyard gardens for those conditions. The work is measured, built and planted to the lot that exists — not to an acreage template brought in from the edge of the city.
We work through design, council documentation where it is required, construction and ongoing care so the courtyard remains usable after the scaffolding comes down.
Lawn Installation Sydney
Most Inner Sydney yards don’t get a paddock’s worth of sun. A Newtown courtyard boxed in by two-storey neighbours. A Balmain side strip that only sees morning light. A Marrickville rear over clay, with a fence stealing the afternoon. That’s the brief. We supply and install natural lawn and artificial turf to match the light, the soil and how you actually use the space — not a roll that looked good on a farm photo.
Natural Grass goes down where it can live. On these blocks that usually means a soft-leaf buffalo: Sir Walter DNA Certified for mixed sun and shade, Stampede hybrid if kids or a dog are going to work it, Sapphire when the courtyard sits in heavier shade. Sir Grange or Empire zoysia if you want a finer leaf and less mowing. TifTuf hybrid bermuda and Eureka kikuyu only come out when the yard cops full sun for most of the day. Put either of those on a dark terrace and you’ll be staring at thin, pale grass by the second summer.
Artificial Turf is for the sites natural lawn won’t hold: deep shade, a slab you don’t want to break out, a dog run, a side passage you can’t get a mower into. We spec polyethylene landscape turf in a 30–40mm pile for a lawn look, a shorter 20–25mm pile for tight high-traffic strips, and a pet-grade, high-drain product if an animal is going to live on it. Base, fall and drainage first. The roll goes down last. We don’t drop turf on rubble and call it a lawn — real or fake.

Lawn Supply
We supply the roll. Natural lawn and artificial turf, ordered for the job — not sitting in a yard going off.
Natural: Sir Walter DNA Certified buffalo, Stampede, Sapphire, Sir Grange zoysia. TifTuf, Eureka kikuyu where the sun is there.
Artificial: PE landscape 30–40mm, short pile 20–25mm, pet-grade high-drain.
Certified LSA varieties come with the grower’s 10-year product warranty. That’s on the grass, not on a roll laid on wet clay. We spec the variety to the light and the use on your block, then bring it in fresh.
Lawn Installation
We measure the yard, pick the variety, quote the job. Then we do the work that decides whether the lawn lives: excavate, fix levels and fall, prep the soil or the synthetic base, lay it, clean up.
Natural goes down the day it arrives. Watered in. Stay off it until it knits.
Artificial gets a compacted base, drainage, hidden joins, edges that don’t lift.
A site visit first. We don’t quote a lawn off three phone photos.
Lawn Maintenance
We come back. Mow, edge, feed, top dress, patch the burns, treat weeds and pests with products that match the variety — buffalo is picky.
If the lawn is thin because of shade or a wet dish of clay, we say so. Spraying bindii every August on a dead pad is not maintenance. That’s a relay or a change of surface.
Better on yards we laid. We’ll still quote an Inner West lawn we didn’t put down if it’s our kind of site.
Natural Lawn Varieties Sydney
Night lighting is what turns a courtyard into an outdoor room you can use after dark. Depth, contrast and a clear path through the garden matter as much as the planting did during the day.
DC uses LED spike lights in garden beds to throw light up the trunk and out through the canopy. A tree, a water bowl or the fire-pit edge becomes the thing you see — not the fitting. Light moving through leaves and branches gives the courtyard depth, makes the space easier to occupy, and sets the tone when people stay outside.
Because the fittings are spiked, they can be placed, aimed and moved as plants grow. All spike lights in this range are 24V DC and need a suitable LED driver. See the LED Drivers page for pairing and capacity.
The Park 20W flood light is a 24V extra-low voltage fitting for broader courtyard and garden lighting — activity areas, lawn edges, pool surrounds and places that need a wider wash than a spike spotlight. An aluminium reflector keeps the output efficient. Warm white 3000K at 1678 lumens. The 24V supply allows thinner cable and cleaner routing through garden beds and along walls. Description The Iris 8W RGBW spike spotlight is for a courtyard or garden feature that needs both a classic warm white and, when wanted, colour. Use 3000K for everyday evenings. Switch to RGB when a tree, wall or sculpture should carry a stronger accent. The dark grey body sits in the planting on a 308 mm spike. The Blaze 36W spike spotlight is the high-power fitting for very large trees. A tight 20° beam carries height and distance with a clean column of light rather than a wide flood. The body is dark grey aluminium, coastal-rated, and sits in the garden bed on a 308 mm spike. he Karri 20W spike spotlight is for large, mature trees and big garden volumes where a smaller spike will not reach. Powder-coated dark grey aluminium sits back in the planting; after dark it throws a strong, even 45° wash up through the canopy. Use it on substantial feature trees and deeper courtyards that need real output, not just a glow. Warm white 3000K, high CRI, and a coastal-ready body. Runs on 24V DC — LED driver sold separately. The Willow 11.5W spike spotlight is the high-output fitting in the range — compact in the garden bed, strong enough for large trees. It will comfortably light a canopy up to about 15 metres. The 30° beam reaches height with a tighter column of light. The 60° beam opens out across a broad crown. The Lotus 5W spike spotlight is for feature trees and courtyard focal points up to about five metres high. Use the 40° beam when you want height up through a canopy. Use the 60° beam when the crown is broad and you need the light to spread. The body is compact — 68 mm diameter × 101 mm high, with a 160 mm spike — so the fitting sits in the garden bed rather than on it. An adjustable head lets you aim the lamp after the planting is in. The Firefly 3W spike spotlight is a small, robust LED fitting for courtyards, garden beds and pots. By day the body sits low in the planting. After dark it throws a warm white beam onto a tree, a piece of stone, or a courtyard feature. The spiked base pushes into soil so the light can be placed, tested and moved without a fixed mount. The head adjusts to aim up into foliage or across a wall. Graphite or black finishes sit quietly against planting and masonry.

Artificial Lawn Varieties
A courtyard after dark still has to be easy to walk through. Path lights and bollards sit beside the paving or in the garden bed and throw a low wash along the route — enough to see the ground, a step or the edge of a planter without lighting the neighbours. Most fittings can be aimed along the path or down onto the surface so the beam stays on the walking line. The same light can pick up a plant or object as you pass.
Water is a different kind of light. An underwater fitting in a pond or water feature uses the movement of the surface to throw pattern onto a wall or courtyard floor. Warm white is the usual setting. Amber and RGB are available where colour is part of the design.
Leave the scheme on through the evening: LED fittings are efficient and built for long hours, not seasonal lamp changes. Most path lights, bollards and pond lights in this range are 24V DC and need a suitable LED driver. See the LED Drivers page for pairing and capacity.
Low-voltage joins in the garden fail when moisture travels up the sheath. Solder the cores, cover the joint with a heat-shrink cap, then sleeve the whole join with this outer tube so water cannot wick along the inner and outer insulation. The cap alone is not enough. Heat and cold will still pull a film of moisture along the cable if the outer layer is missing. Done once, properly, the circuit lasts. 1200 mm length, 16 mm diameter. Shrink with a heat gun. The WAVE receiver sits between the 12V or 24V LED driver and the fittings. Pair it with a WAVE remote to switch, dim and — on RGB lamps — change colour without extra wall-switch cable. Works with single-colour and RGB lighting. Use with the WAVE Multi-Zone Single Colour remote or the WAVE Multi-Zone RGB remote. Remotes and receivers are sold separately so each courtyard can have the zones it needs. RF 434 MHz / 868 MHz, typical range 20–30 metres through walls and around corners.

Casambi is a low-energy Bluetooth mesh system for switching, dimming and colour from a phone, tablet or watch. The free app sets scenes and timers — for example on at sunset, off at 10 pm — without a separate wall clock. This Arditi PWM module has four channels. It will run single-colour, tunable white, RGB or RGBW fittings. On single-colour lamps the four outputs can be four independent zones from one module. Twin-sheathed two-core low voltage cable for 24V garden lighting. Use the 6 mm cable on runs over about 50 metres so voltage drop stays under control. Shorter runs can use the 5 mm cable.
