The Inner West is not an empty block. Yards are small, already built against the house, and constrained by what sits on every side: a rear lane that will take a barrow and little else, winter shade from a two-storey neighbour, reactive clay under failed concrete, and heritage brick that is to remain.
DC designs, constructs and maintains courtyard gardens for those conditions. The work is measured, built and planted to the lot that exists — not to an acreage template brought in from the edge of the city.
We work through design, council documentation where it is required, construction and ongoing care so the courtyard remains usable after the scaffolding comes down.
Garden Irrigation Sydney
A garden only stays planted if the water is designed with the paving, the beds and the shade. DC specifies and installs irrigation as part of the landscape — not as a timer bolted on after the last plant is in.
Inner West terraces, harbour courtyards around Vaucluse and gardens at West Pymble, Gordon and St Ives do not water the same way. Clay, sandstone, lane access, first-floor shade and council limits on runoff all change the layout. The system is drawn for that block: drip in the beds, the right coverage on any lawn, a controller that can be zoned and shut down, and pipe in the ground before the planting, not through it.
We work with homeowners, builders and other designers. Residential courtyards are the core of the work. Larger gardens are specified the same way — by zone, soil and use — not with a generic “set and forget” kit.
Design, install and service sit with the same team that built the garden. If the courtyard is already finished, we can retrofit a system that respects the paving and the trees that have to stay.

How We Work
Irrigation is specified with the courtyard, not added when the plants are already in. The sequence below is how DC takes a system from the first site visit to a controller that matches the garden.
1. Site Visit
The block is measured with you there. What the landscape has to do, where the water will come from (mains, tank or both), and what the ground will allow: clay, sandstone, existing paving, trees that must stay, lane or hallway access.
Existing pipe, taps, tanks and meters are noted. If there is a signed landscape plan, that is the starting drawing. If there is not, irrigation is not designed in isolation — it waits on, or is drawn with, the garden layout.
2. Deisgn
Zones follow sun, soil and plant type. Drip in beds. Separate coverage only where a lawn or a high-water feature needs it. Trees and pots get their own point if they cannot share a bed line.
The drawing shows mainline, laterals, valve positions, drip rate, filters, pressure reduction and the controller. Pipe sizes are calculated so the last emitter still runs. Sleeves under paving are marked before anyone sets a paver.
You receive a layout for review. Changes sit on that drawing, not in a site conversation after the trench is open.
3. Pricing
The price is taken from the signed design. It names what is in the job — pipe, valves, controller, tank connection if specified, plumber for the potable tie-in, commissioning — and what is not.
Access is priced as it is: rear lane, through the house, or an open side. A courtyard in Glebe and a garden in Gordon do not get the same figure.
4. Co-ordination
On a new build the irrigation is programmed with masonry, concrete or paved surfaces and planting. Sleeves and valve boxes go in with the hardscape. On a retrofit the paving and tree protection zones are agreed before a trench is cut.
Where a licensed plumber is required for mains or backflow, that booking sits in the programme, not as an afterthought. Council or water-authority requirements on the lot are checked against the 10.7 and the plan.
5.Installation
Mainline and laterals are laid to the drawing. Joins are made for burial — not a temporary join left in the bed. Valve boxes finish at a level that can be opened after mulch. Drip is pinned and flushed before the emitters are left to run.
Tree protection fencing stays up where the consent or the arborist requires it. Work hours follow the DA if there is one.
6. Commissioning

7.Aftercare
Irrigation is inspected with the garden care visits: filters, flush points, solenoids, controller time and season. Blocked drippers and a zone that did not return after a power cut are found on a round, not after the bed has dried out.
If the planting changes, the laterals can be altered to the new plan. The system is not left as a clock no one on site understands.

DC specifies and supplies automatic and manual watering systems for Sydney courtyards, lawns and garden beds.
The range covers poly pipe, sprinklers and drip, controllers including Wi-Fi models, backflow prevention, decoders, multi-core cable, electrofusion fittings and copper press. Brands include Hunter, Rain Bird, Toro, HR Products, Antelco and Philmac.
Poly pipe is stocked in 4 mm, 5 mm, 13 mm, 19 mm and 25 mm, in set coils or cut to length.
Components are chosen for the courtyard they serve — shade, clay or sandstone, tank or mains — not as a single-brand kit. Controllers, valves and drip from this list are what the irrigation drawings refer to. Supply is to Sydney as part of the landscape package, or as specified parts for a retrofit

Most Inner West systems DC sees are already in the ground: one solenoid, a clock in the laundry, spray hitting the fence. The courtyard does not need a new mainline. It needs the parts that waste water taken out.
